In today’s world it is becoming increasingly difficult to find medium format film cameras, whether new or used, in both good condition and at an affordable price, without even considering weight.  Our goal when we designed the Goodman Zone was to create a lightweight professional medium format camera offered at an entry-level price, ensuring that any photographer interested in trying out medium format photography for the first time could do so.

A truly modular system, the high-quality 3D printed Goodman Zone body is compatible with multiple lens and back options. At its base, the Zone was first built around the legendary Mamiya Press lens lineup and the RB67 Pro S back (the Pro SD is not compatible), as they were amongst the most affordable and easily accessible options, while still maintaining stunning image quality.  We have since developed a helical adapter that allows you to mount many large format lenses, depending on its flange focal distance, and a proprietary 3D printed 6×6 magazine.  Both the magazine and the adapter can be ordered as part of a full Goodman Zone setup, simply select them as extras on this page before heading to the checkout.

For those not comfortable with the method of zone focusing, we offer a 3D printed focusing screen that attaches to the body by magnets, allowing you to effortlessly switch between the back and the focusing screen. We also highly recommend the Goodfinder app; by mounting your smartphone to the top of the camera, the screen becomes the perfect substitute for a viewfinder and lightmeter. At the moment it is only available for iOS, but there are other suitable options for Android users.

Have a look on the assembly of the Goodman Zone medium format camera

BASIC KIT INCLUDES:

  • 1 Goodman Zone camera body
  • 1 lens holder
  • 1 sport viewfinder
  • 1 cold shoe flash mount
  • sanding paper
  • all the necessary hardware, tools and screws for assembling the camera
  • self-adhesive carbon or faux-leather decor skin (optional, one of them is free of charge)

You can also purchase a pre-assembled body, meaning your camera will come in one piece and you only need to attach your lens and back.  Once loaded with film, you’re ready to go!

The package does not include the lens or back. We do not sell lenses or the Mamiya RB67 Pro S back, however, our proprietary 3D printed Goodman 6×6 magazine is available for purchase.

Grip with shutter release cable holder knobs: The grip can be conveniently attached to either side of the camera body, and both knobs are capable of holding a shutter release cable that can be kept in place with small screws.

120 film holder grip with shutter release cable holder knobs:  A thicker version of the original grip, big enough to stash a spare roll of film inside.  As well, both knobs are capable of holding a shutter release cable that can be kept in place with small screws.

Pinhole board: If you would like to use your Goodman Zone as a pinhole camera, we offer a setup complete with a board and a professionally drilled pinhole plate.  At this point, all you will need is a back, and we highly recommend you check out our proprietary 3D printed Goodman 6×6 magazine.

Pro flash mount with bubble level and smartphone holder: A professional version of the original flash mount, this is an element that has been specially machined for its high durability, designed to carry heavier weights.  It can be used to mount your smartphone as an external viewfinder and light meter through the Goodfinder app (available on iOS only).

Shutter release cable holder: It attaches the shutter release cable to the camera body, cable is not included.

Side strap holder: This allows you to easily attach your own DIY side strap, or even a Fidlock design, rather than using complicated brass inserts found on many traditional medium format cameras.

Wood veneer inlay: Decorate your camera with a pre-cut genuine wood veneer inlay to give it a beautiful and unique finishing touch.

Goodman 6×6 Magazine: The MAG66 is a 3D printed camera back designed exclusively for the Goodman Zone camera. Similar to other medium format backs, the magazine accepts 120 film, has a frame counter window to keep you on track, and the film is easily advanced by the two rotating knobs on top. The dark slide moves smoothly, but is fixed in place so it cannot be fully removed, ensuring it won’t be lost or misplaced. As well, swapping the ground glass is a breeze as the magazine opens and closes like a door on its side hinge, meaning you don’t have to fully remove the back in order to compose and focus your images.

Cinezone Adapter: An adapter that allows you to mount your smartphone on a Goodman Zone to use as a digital back. It allows you to capture unique stills and videos, without compromising the characteristics of medium format cameras. Subjects are projected onto a matte acetate focusing screen, from where your smartphone captures the final image. The phone is held in place by a mount, and its position is fully adjustable, making the Cinezone compatible with any phone model.

Goodman Focusing Screen: For those not comfortable using the zone focus method, we offer a focusing screen to help with focus and composition. It attaches to the body by the use of magnets, allowing you to effortlessly switch between the back and focusing screen.  The holder is 3D printed and functions with tracing paper rather than glass, making it lightweight and affordable, all while being as sturdy as any other ground glass.

Helical lens adapter with Goodman Focusing Screen: Although the Zone was originally designed around the Mamiya Press lens lineup, the helical lens adapter gives you the freedom to use many other large format lenses, depending on its flange focal distance and front plate size.

The Goodman focusing screen is always automatically included with the purchase of the helical lens adapter, no need to order them separately.

The helical cylinder exists in different sizes:

  • Base model: this will fit those lenses that has a minimum of 86mm and a maximum of 113 mm flange focal distance
  • Long model: this will fit those lenses that has a minimum of 96mm and a maximum of 128 mm flange focal distance

To ensure you are purchasing the proper model, it is important to know the flange focal distance of your chosen lens. Please carefully read any literature pertaining to your particular lens and examine the sizes provided to precisely determine which helical adapter fits your setup.

The front plate is available in 3 different diameter holes: 25mm, 28mm, 30mm. If you need a different front plate size, please send us an enquiry at info@doragoodman.com, and we can 3D print one for your specific lens.

What they’re saying about our cameras

Greg G.USA

Dora’s cameras are just so awesome. I ordered a Zone and also a Scura DIY kit from her, and the quality is amazing, honestly I was surprised as it is 3D printed. The kits include everything you need, her tutorial videos helped me a lot to assemble the cameras, and I love shooting with both of them, having beautiful results.
Definitely recommend to everyone who likes to experiment with new things and wants to try a new way of analog photography.

Harvey M.United Kingdom

The experience of shooting and developing photographs from a camera that you have built yourself is incredibly satisfying! I bought a Goodman Zone and the Scura as well, I loved the build and assembly process! Once I started shooting with them, I quickly fell in love with the cameras - it's really rewarding to use and the results were more than I hoped for in terms of image quality.
I highly recommend Dora Goodman Cameras to anyone who wants an experience whereby they feel involved and immersed in every stage of the photographic process, from building and assembly through to producing gorgeous prints.

Zeb A.USA

The Scura 120 has done a marvelous job of distinguishing itself from that crowd. I think it begins with the fact that you have to assemble it yourself. But there is more to the Scura than the DIY aspect of building it, the curved planes of the camera make it feel quite at home in the hands and the wood finish easily makes it one of the more beautiful cameras on the shelf when it gets a break from being out in the field with me.

Andres O.Japan

The Goodman Zone is an amazing camera that lets you take control of all the aspects of the creative process of photography. Meticulously selecting the composition, deciding the focus, setting the exposure parameters, and finally shooting; the process with the Goodman Zone is as simple as with any other mechanical film camera. However, unlike other cameras, you are using something you assembled and personalized to your liking, not only aesthetically speaking, but also to the arrangement and types of accessories that you are more comfortable with. When i first started with the Goodman Zone, I came for its gorgeous design and its low price, but stayed for its personalization potential, its ease of use and Dora Goodman's nice and welcoming community.

David G.USA

I really enjoyed building the Scura and the shooting experience is so much fun and relaxing! I like the shutter, the wide curved film plane is really clever solution, and I like my results, the dreamy pinhole world. Overall very nice design, highly recommend to everyone who would like to experiment with pinhole photography.

Po M.Hong Kong

The Goodman Zone is compact and light as well as a replacement for the massive Mamiya Press camera body and 65mm lens...That heavy camera from the ’60s was designed for professional photojournalists.

Tobias S.Germany

I took the Zone with me on a trip north to the baltic sea around Rostock/Germany to put it through its paces and shoot the first few rolls of film. Shooting with it was very smooth, and so was changing the rolls from the printed 6x6 magazine. Compared to my other medium format cameras, it is very light too! When I received the scans, I didn't expect much, to be perfectly honest. I thought most of them would be out of focus anyway and have terrible light leaks, but I was pleasantly surprised to get extremely sharp images back with no artifacts at all. Some credit goes to the nice sharp blue dot Mamiya Press lens, of course, but the Zone is so well designed that most props need to go to Dora Goodman for this. It's a sure companion for future trips.

Mario C.Italy

I love my Goodman Zone, it is very light, aesthetically beautiful, very functional! I was surprised how durable it is, I hike and travel a lot and I always had a problem how to carry my heavy medium format cameras with which are also very expensive so I was a bit scared ot breaking them on my trips. The Zone solves my problems, it is super easy to carry and made of strong material. I am also happy with my image results, it perfectly does the job.

Nicolas G.France

Bought the Dora Goodman 6x12 in May 2021, I was already interested by their concept of 3D printed modular cameras so when I saw the 6x12 on the website I decided to pull the trigger and buy it. I have to say that I was very pleased with my purchases, the camera is very easy to use and the fact that you can modulate it to accommodate another lens is really great, so far I tried the Schneider 47mm super angulon and a Nikon 90mm on it. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a very light 6x12 camera, with the advantage to accommodate a fresnel glass to focus in case you want to be accurate.

Simone H.Germany

I always liked the special aesthetic all of the Goodman cameras have. Their lines are distinctively unique and each camera is a small piece of art. I took much time with my Zone, never having done zone focusing or any medium format work before, the results came as pleasant surprises from a much more lightweight camera than the non-printed alternatives, with the best part being I can still change it and adapt it to my needs. After a year into the journey of this camera, I am inclined to say it may never end!

Wendy C.United Kingdom

The Scura is fun to build and fun to use this camera. It is simple, sturdy, and easy to work with once you get the hang of rotating the winder the correct amount. Also very affordable and well made for the price. I like the artistic style - my images had a soft dreamy look. And also it is small and light, so you can carry it in your pocket and use light tripods and clamps with ease.

Marcel P.Germany

Using a Dora Goodman camera for me means; to tickling the maximum out of the simple. I like the feeling and the look so much, fusion old with new is just great. Everyone of these cameras will show its own look sooner or later. You are simply inclined to evolve your camera and adapt it to your needs, just as you push your output further. A camera that grows with you, not just by changing a lens.

Daniel P.Hungary

I've been using my Zone for about a year now and I'm still as excited about it as the day I got it. Besides the cool design, the main feature for me was its size and weight that allows me to carry it everywhere. I also enjoyed that the camera slows you down a bit, offering a different shooting process. A great experience overall.

Anna K.

“I am very happy with my 35mm Scura camera. First of all I love how tiny and light it is, it can fit even into the smallest bag, and it has literally no weight. The usage of the camera is easy, the shutter is very convenient. It took me a while to learn the secrets of pinhole photography, but if you follow the advices from Dora and her team you can get epic results, at least I love mines. Their customer service is pretty good, they’re always super nice and happy to help!”
